Look Back: Rebecca Love for the Backspace Spring Fling
Oh boy!
What a funny thing it is to share your work in progress with a room full of strangers! Last night was such a special combination of incredible nerves, absolute doubt and just a total release of expectations. It was truly wonderful getting to introduce Mixtape Projects to a room full of people who had nooooo idea who we were. And to do it with humour and just pure fun, messing up and making up in the same sentence, was a GIFT!
But let me tell you, it was a ROLLERCOASTER of a night.
It started really low as we were rehearsing before heading to the venue. It hit me that this was a piece that I had never really shown anybody else and so my head was swimming with thoughts of, “this isn’t even funny”, “this is off brand”, “people will be bored”. I was being attacked by my inner saboteur as RuPaul would say. But I FIRED back and got my head screwed on straight again.
Then, as we were travelling to the venue I got a serge of ADRENALINE!!! We saw a couple of our “Mixtape” stickers around town and that was the perfect reminder of who we are, why we do what we do and how much we love sharing our work with unsuspecting people.
And then… there was the performance. A perfect combination of love and laughter from the audience filled the room and what left my mouth and what came out of our instruments was just confidence and commitment to this ABSURD story.
So what’s left to say? Putting yourself out there when you’re not totally ready can be an amazing opportunity to just throw your expectations out the window and go with the flow of the audience, and what a serious gift that can be to your work!
I left last night with a completely new perspective on the direction I want to take Rebecca Love in.
And I am so excited to share that with you soon!
